Bring sunscreen and water if it’s a hot day.
This Detour is best between 7am and 10pm when all of the businesses along the route are open.
If you want to end with a major water display, take the tour May through September and start the tour between 8am and 9pm on the hour. If you want to end with the Buckingham Fountain light show, start the Detour an hour before dusk, May through September.
Avoid taking the tour during big festivals when the park is exceptionally loud and crowded. The only time you truly cannot take the tour, is during the four-day Lollapalooza music festival every July because the path is closed. Check the City of Chicago website for complete festival schedules.
