Jefferson & Taylor, Fisherman's Wharf
Fisherman's Wharf is the most visited place in San Francisco. Somehow, it’s also one of the least well known. Millions of people come here each year; this Detour unlocks the side of the Wharf they rarely get to see.
You’ll follow Candy, a lifelong commercial fisherman, into the heart of the working wharf, to experience the grueling industry that’s giving way to the chain restaurants and souvenir shops you see today. You'll hear from Angela, who owns a thriving crab company with her mom and sisters, no thanks to the male fisherman who tried to shut them down.
Plus, you’ll blow a quarter on an antique game designed to make you mad, hear how a Wharf businessman once bankrupted San Francisco, find out what it feels like to jump into the cold bay for the very first time, and learn why even the meanest criminals sometimes get their hands cut off. We’re going to have a lot of fun.
You can take this Detour anytime any day, but a few stops are closed before 10am or after 7pm. The ideal starting time for this Detour is around 11am on a weekday.
Bring a jacket. It can get windy on the Wharf, especially in the evening. Also, make sure you've got at least a dollar with you.
